If it’d been solely up to him, Tony would have gladly taken to his workshop and sulked into a project for a week following his fallout with his dad. But Pepper being Pepper, she made it pretty clear he’d suffer in some not-so-subtle way if he didn’t at least put a foot forward in patching things up. He figured he'd do a toe, then call it good.
